Lack of Sex Drive in Men – Major Causes of Male Low Libido

July 22nd, 2011

According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, sex is one of the basic needs of humans along with oxygen, water, and food. It is the means by which we propagate, ensuring the survival of our species. Not only that, it’s we have also found it to be a pleasurable experience. It is for this reason that the average man is concerned with his libido (especially the lack thereof) for most of his adult life.

Decreased libido and impotence have several psychological and physical causes. Depression is one of the leading causes of low libido in males. People who are depressed often find it hard to be motivated to do anything, even sex. Unfortunately, lowered libido and impotence are some of the major side effects of the drugs given for chronic depression. In order to break this vicious cycle, doctors may either switch the patient to a different drug or give them weekend drug holidays. During these weekends, the patient doesn’t take the drug on Friday and Saturday, resuming his regimen on Sunday. Patients on this holiday find their interest in lovemaking very much improved while their mood remains unaffected.

Guilt resulting from infidelity may also cause a man to be an unwilling partner and so will gender conflict or confusion. In male dominated cultures where maleness is defined by your ‘machismo’ gays are often forced into the closet and have no choice but to have a traditional marriage. The female halves of this matrimony often find it difficult, if not impossible to coax their husbands into bed.

A history of sexual abuse as a child or even as an adult, emotionally scars the victims for life and may lead them to dislike sex. This may usually be overcome by therapy and counseling.

Last but not the least is certain medical conditions that predispose a man towards a low libido and even impotence. Hormonal imbalances affecting testosterone levels are one of the main causes. Examples are hypogonadism, diabetes, and Cushing’s syndrome. Hypogonadism is a medical condition wherein the functioning of the gonads (in men’s case, the testicles) is decreased, which of course causes low testosterone levels, which in turn causes low libido. Diabetes, on the other hand affects the small capillaries in the body causing erectile dysfunction. Cushing’s syndrome is basically having too much cortisol in the body. This in turn, causes hypogonadism.

Cardiovascular disorders are also to blame. Hardening and narrowing of blood vessels are legitimate reasons why men often experience failure to launch. Not enough blood is supplied to the male genitalia causing erectile dysfunction. Inadequate blood supply is also the reason why men taking antihypertensive medication experience difficulty in the bedroom. Antihypertensives act to dilate the blood vessels while in order to attain a state conducive to lovemaking, some blood vessels in a man’s equipment needs to be constricted. It is because of this that men with high blood pressure are prohibited from taking V-iagra C-ialis, and L-evitra. You can take herbal supplements Shilajit ES or Booster Capsules along with Mast Mood Oil for massage to increase libido as a safer option.
